Description

Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, was one of the many polymaths of the Islamic Golden Age. A great commentator on the work of Aristotle, he added important arguments to the mind/body problem; his ‘Flying Man’ thought experiment pre-empting the work of René Descartes by more than 500 years. In this course, we will explore his arguments for the immortal soul, as well as the contentious consequences this had for Islamic orthodoxy.
