Making reference to philosopher Kieran Setiya's distinction between existential value and ameliorative value, as well as the traditional Hindu stages of life, we will explore the value of life's goals.

Description
It was the demise of the Western Roman Empire and the formation and evolution of the Abrahamic Religions that brought about the transition from Classical antiquity to the Middle Ages. In this course we will explore the thought of the last great pagan philosopher of antiquity Plotinus; the founder of Neoplatonism, and the first great Christian philosopher and theologian St. Augustine of Hippo.

Description
Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, was one of the many polymaths of the Islamic Golden Age. A great commentator on the work of Aristotle, he added important arguments to the mind/body problem; his ‘Flying Man’ thought experiment pre-empting the work of René Descartes by more than 500 years. In this course, we will explore his arguments for the immortal soul, as well as the contentious consequences this had for Islamic orthodoxy.

What does it mean to be authentic? Just how does one "keep it real"? Have ideals of authenticity been corrupted by an excessively individualistic Western culture? In this talks Nietzsche ("Become who you are") and Heidegger ("People are inauthentic because they allow themselves to be moulded by the group") will help us to explore our authenticity.
